India’s COVID-19 crisis grows further, but mortality rate low says Health Ministry

India’s COVID-19 crisis continues, with cases near the three-million mark and deaths exceeding 50,000.

COVID-19 – the disease caused by severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) or, simply coronavirus – has claimed 52,153 lives in India at the time of writing. Confirmed coronavirus infections, meanwhile, number at 2,724,642. Of the cases reported thus far, 674,571 are active with 1,997,918 people fortunately having recovered. 

On the basis of confirmed cases and fatalities, India’s COVID-19 crisis makes the country the third and fourth most-affected country in the world by COVID-19, respectively. It trails the United States and Brazil in the number of confirmed infections and the United States, Brazil and Mexico in the number of confirmed fatalities. 

Having surpassed 50,000 deaths, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has stressed that the mortality rate in India is low compared to other high-burden countries. “[The] USA crossed 50,000 deaths in 23 days, Brazil in 95 days and Mexico in 141 days,” the Ministry said. “India took 156 days to reach this national figure.” 

A mortality rate of 1.93 percent is recorded by the Ministry which, Times News Network (TNN) reports, “[underlines] what it said is a sustained focus on effective clinical management of positive cases. Apart from treatment in hospitals, measures like supervised home isolation, use of non-invasive oxygen support and improved services of ambulances for ferrying patients for prompt and timely treatment have helped keep the fatality rate in check, officials said.

At the global level, the pandemic continues to grow. 22,103,544 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed thus far, of which 6,484,457 are active. Of the active cases, 99 percent denote 6,422,261 who are in mild condition. The remaining one percent of cases denotes 62,196 people who are in serious or critical condition. 14,840,714 people have recovered from COVID-19. 778,373, tragically, have succumbed to the disease.
