Sunday marked yet another grim milestone in India’s experience with the COVID-19 pandemic, as it marked the conclusion of the country’s deadliest week of the pandemic.

That week, India saw a sixteen percent increase in its case count compared to the previous week as it recorded almost 3.7 lakh new infections with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), or simply coronavirus, which causes the disease COVID-19. In the same timeframe, 5,345 people lost their lives including 758 fatalities on Sunday alone.

This takes India’s confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections thus far to 1,865,947 at the time of writing, of which 588,981 are active, according to Worldometer data. This takes into consideration the fortunate statistic that 1,237,885 people have recovered from COVID-19. However, this is marred by the tragic deaths of 39,081 thus far in India due to COVID-19.

India is regularly surpassing its highest number of new infections in a single day. Exemplifying the reach of the COVID-19 pandemic is the news in recent days that a number of senior political figures have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in recent days, among them the Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah.

The 55-year-old Shah, a senior figure in and former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and member of the Lok Sabha, announced on Twitter that “on getting the initial symptoms of corona, I got the test done and the report came back positive. My health is fine, but I am being admitted to the hospital on the advice of doctors. I request that all of you who have come in contact with me in the last few days, please isolate yourself and get your inquiry done.”

Globally, confirmed cases of COVID-19 have surpassed eighteen million. At the time of writing, 18,489,618 people have been infected with SARS-CoV-2. Of these people, 11,716,827 have recovered while 698,509 have succumbed to COVID-19 – a ratio of 94 : 6 per data from Worldometer.

At the time of writing, 6,074,282 people are infected with SARS-CoV-2. Of these individuals, 6,009,700 are in mild condition representing 99 percent of active cases. The remaining one percent of patients – translating to 64,582 people – are in serious or critical condition,

India remains the third most-affected country in the world by COVID-19 according to confirmed infections (active and closed) so far. The United States leads the world in the number of cases, trailed by Brazil.
