COVID-19 cases: Biggest rise in a single day

Coronavirus in IndiaIndia has recorded its largest spike in coronavirus infections in a single day, taking the number of people affected by COVID-19 in the country to more than 6,000. 

The number of infections with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) – commonly referred to as coronavirus, which causes the disease COVID-19 – jumped by almost 800 yesterday, the highest recorded increase in coronavirus infections in a single day. “Over the last 24 hours, 773 cases have been reported. There were 32 deaths also reported in this time,” reported Lav Agarwal, joint secretary in the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday.

At the time of writing, the total number of confirmed coronavirus infections in India to date number at 6,237 and the number of fatalities number at 186 according to Worldometer. Active COVID-19 cases in the country number at 5,482, with 569 people fortunately having recovered from the disease. 

Amidst concerns over the pace of testing for COVID-19 in India, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that the highest number of such tests were conducted in a single day on Wednesday. 13,345 people were tested for COVID-19 yesterday, the ICMR said, adding that the rate of testing has been improving. The ICMR reported that testing for COVID-19 is now being conducted at a national average rate of 82.6 per million. This is a significant increase from April 1st, when the average stood at 40.5 tests per million.

The lockdown imposed by the Union Government is due to end next week. However, reports indicate that the Centre is mulling extending the timeframe beyond the initial 21 days. Multiple state governments are keen for this to be the case. Opinion polling suggests a majority of Indians want the Government to extend the lockdown.

Globally, coronavirus infections number at 1,532,439 at the time of writing according to Worldometer. Of the currently-infected patients, 337,468 – fortunately – have recovered. Sadly, 89,716 people have lost their lives.
