The largest jump in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in India in a single day has been recorded. The country saw 386 fresh infections confirmed according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, taking the total case count to 1,637.

The Ministry has also reported 38 fatalities due to COVID-19 whilst 132 people have recovered. As such, the current number of active COVID-19 cases in India stands at 1,466.

Globally, according to Worldometer, there are 875,445 confirmed COVID-19 cases of which 647,034 are active at the time of writing. Of the currently-infected patients, 613,373 (95 percent) are in mild condition. The remaining 33,661 (five percent) patients are in serious or critical condition. The death toll worldwide stands at 43,459.

India is in its eighth day of a 21-day lockdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month in a bid to curb the spread of the virus. While the lockdown has won praise from some quarters, it has also attracted controversy from commentators who have observed the plight of migrant workers displaced from major cities and forced to embark on journeys spanning hundreds, if not thousands, of miles to return to their native villages. The treatment of some of those workers has been the subject of fierce criticism – a recent high-profile incident saw a number of migrants sprayed with disinfectant in the Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh.

There are also concerns over India’s handling of COVID-19, particularly in view of a lack of testing which has sparked fears among some that COVID-19 cases in India could go under the radar. A deficit of personal protective equipment available to frontline healthcare workers – a situation the Government is working to address – has also been the subject of controversy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to hold a videoconferencing session with Chief Ministers tomorrow to address the COVID-19 crisis. COVID-19 cases in India are dispersed throughout its states and union territories.
