The administrations that have done so include Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chandigarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. Lockdown and measures imposed by other state- and union territory-level administrations cover 58 districts, while stringent restrictions on the movement of people have been brought into force covering almost 600 districts.

The Centre ordered lockdown measures to be undertaken in the country as COVID-19 cases in India continue to rise and fresh fatalities due to the disease continue to be reported. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to citizens to adhere to social distancing measures and called for enforcement of the same. “Several people are not taking lockdown seriously,” he said. “Kindly save yourself, save your families and follow directions seriously…I request state governments to ensure adherence of norms and the law.”

Modi is due to address the nation later today at 8 p.m. IST, touching on “vital aspects of the menace of COVID-19.”
