First coronavirus death confirmed in India

The passing of a 76 year-old Karnataka man has marked the first coronavirus death in India, test results have confirmed. 

Cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have reached 76 in India, dispersed across multiple states and union territories. At the time of writing, coronavirus cases have been detected in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana as well as in the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. 

News of India’s first coronavirus death is likely to add to public concern, although the Karnataka health department has said it is taking the appropriate measures. “The necessary contact tracing, isolation and other measures as per protocol are being carried out,” it said. “[The] Telangana government has also been informed since he went to a private hospital there.” The department reported that the individual who lost his life to coronavirus had a number of pre-existing illnesses, including asthma, hypertension, and pneumonia. He also had a travel history to Saudi Arabia, which is among the nations affected by the coronavirus pandemic. 

India’s first coronavirus death has been reported the same week as the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. With a spate of fresh cases having been reported in India in recent weeks, the country is undertaking intensive measures to counteract the disease. The steps include the suspension of all visas and e-visas granted to foreign nationals bar diplomatic personnel and officials from organisations such as the WHO and the United Nations. Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has said that 30,000 to 35,000 people are being monitored. Screening has covered 1,057,506 people to date. 

At the global level, more than 133,000 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed at the time of writing, as well as 4,950 deaths. 68,898 people have recovered from the virus. Of the 59,333 active infections, 53,410 are in individuals who are reported to be in mild condition. 5,923 affected by COVID-19 are in serious or critical condition.
