Doctor labeling a blood sample tube positive with coronavirus 2019 or 2019-nCoV, novel coronavirus found in Wuhan, China. Outbreak of 2019-nCoV concept. The outbreak of 2019-nCoV continues, although some experts believe that the worst may soon be over. The senior medical advisor to the Government of China has said that the outbreak of the virus could be over as soon as April and projected that it would reach its peak this month.

Nonetheless, cases continue to rise. 43,106 cases have been reported at the time of writing, with 1,018 deaths. Of the 43,106 cases reported, 4,045 have recovered. Of the 38,043 individuals currently infected with 2019-nCoV, 30,698 are reported to be in mild condition. The remaining 7,345 are in critical condition.

India has reported three cases of 2019-nCoV, all of them in the state of Kerala. In fortunate news, one of the infected individuals – a student from Wuhan University in the Hubei province capital where the outbreak originated – has tested negative for 2019-nCoV in a fresh test at the National Institute of Virology. “The blood test result of the first patient from Thrissur from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) testing centre at Alappuzha shows a negative result,” commented an official. “But we need confirmation from the NIV at Pune.” The individual’s condition is stable.

Despite the optimism of Chinese officials, and the country accounting for the majority of the world’s confirmed 2019-nCoV cases, the World Health Organization (WHO) maintains that the virus carries ominous portents for the public health community at the global level. “With 99 percent of cases in China, this remains very much an emergency for that country, but one that holds a very grave threat for the rest of the world,” said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

To combat the outbreak of 2019-nCoV, the Director-General emphasised “solidarity, solidarity, solidarity” as “the bottom line” of efforts. “To defeat this outbreak, he said, “we need open and equitable sharing, according to the principles of fairness and equity.”

In its own show of solidarity, India is working to control the outbreak of 2019-nCoV in the south Asia region. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written to Chinese president Xi Jinping offering India’s support and India has offered assistance to countries in the region including Afghanistan and Bhutan.
