Piramal Swasthya has received an award from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for its work in expanding access to affordable healthcare throughout the country.

It was one of five international organisations to receive the Inclusive Health Access Award from the Washington-based agency, as well as a US$30,000 grant. Chief executive officer Vishal Phanse received the award at an event in New York City, stating “USAID’s Inclusive Health Access Award is a testament to Piramal Swasthya’s role as a catalyst. I am humbled that our efforts in this area has been recognized globally. Piramal Swasthya is poised to transform India’s most pressing healthcare needs.” Phanse earlier noted that one million beneficiaries are reached by the organisation daily.

The organisation runs a number of projects aimed at expanding access to healthcare for those who find it difficult to avail treatment. Projects including the Piramal Swasthya Remote Health Advisory and Intervention Service and the Community Outreach Program “[seek] to provide round the clock health advice to remote and vulnerable sections of the community and….[tackle] barriers faced by rural people in accessing primary healthcare”, the organisation writes on its website. ASARA – a tribal health programme operating in Andhra Pradesh – was highlighted by USAID in its award to the NGO, as was its Aspirational Districts Transformation Programme – a collaboration with government think tank Niti Aayog.

Technology plays a crucial role in these efforts, it says, writing that “Piramal Swasthya is bridging the last mile gap in primary healthcare service delivery and it is technology and innovation that enables and makes this possible to reach the most remote and vulnerable population.” USAID credits Piramal Swasthya with benefiting 10.7 crore beneficiaries across twenty Indian states.

Piramal Swasthya is sponsored by the Piramal Foundation, the philanthropic offshoot of the global business conglomerate the Piramal Group. “Over the last decade, Piramal Swasthya has successfully implemented several primary healthcare services and initiatives for the marginalised sections of society, especially in remote and inaccessible geographies across the country,” said the Piramal Group’s vice chairperson Swati Piramal following the organisation’s receipt of the accolade. “At Piramal Swasthya, we are committed to delivering sustainable, scalable, replicable and affordable primary healthcare solutions to unserved and underserved sections of society.”
