Dr. Devi Shetty on health, care ,IMR and heart disease in India

India has the potential to become world leader in healthcare says eminent cardiac surgeon Dr. Devi Shetty. At a conference of the Cardiology Society of India, he said that though the country had world class IT professionals, the technology was not being properly utilised.  He urged that  tackling India’s maternal and infant mortality rates is the need of the hour.

Dr. Devi Shetty is a cardiac surgeon and the Founder and Chairman of Narayana Health(NH)  . He has leveraged economies of scale to provide affordable healthcare and was awarded the Padma Bhushan, third highest civilian award in India for his contribution to the field of affordable healthcare. Narayana Health formerly known as Narayana Hrudyalaya, is a multi-specialty hospital chain in India, headquartered in Bengaluru. It was founded in 2000 by him under the guidance of the Asian Heart Foundation (AHF). Today, it has 29 hospitals in 17 Indian cities.Apart from cardiac surgery, NH also has cardiology, neurosurgery, paediatric surgery, haematology and transplant services, and nephrology among various others.

According to Dr. Shetty, one pregnant woman dies every ten minutes while 3,00,000 infants die the day they are born. At the conference, he urged the government to set up 500 medical colleges in the next five years to produce adequate number of doctors by 2025.On increasing cardiac problems, he said Indians were genetically three times more vulnerable to heart diseases and also attributed the incidences to smoking habits, lack of health consciousness and diabetes.
