50% women and 20% men in India have blood disorders

According to an article in the Times of India, about half the women and a fifth of the men in India are suffering from several types of blood disorders.

Senior haematologist, Dr. MB Agarwal was in Delhi for a public forum organised by the city branch of Indian Academy of Paediatrics and the Thalassaemia Society of Central India. He spoke to the doctors about the advances of managing thalassaemia and gave parents some important advice about dealing with this.

According to him, blood disorders such as anaemia, iron and vitamin deficiency, intestinal worms, excessive bleeding during periods and piles are some of the most common ones among Indians. Interestingly, those of Aryan descent are more prone to such disorders, in comparison to those of Dravidian descent.
