As reported in The Hindu last week, Tamil Nadu has also announced a complete ban on gutka and pan masala. This ban based on the August 2011 regulation issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is now in 24 States and Union Territories.

According to this article, about 52 per cent of oral cancers, are caused by gutka and pan masala, thus making this ban essential in India. Madhya Pradesh was the first to ban gutka and pan masala. Kerala, Gujarat and Mizoram followed soon and West Bengal joined the group very recently.

The Supreme Court supported the campaign to stop the manufacture, storage and sale of this product. It has been asking for compliance reports from the State governments. It is imperative that all State governments take the necessary steps to enforce the implementation of the ban on gutka and pan masala.
