President calls for a second freedom struggle against disease, hunger and poverty

India’s new President has called for a “‘second freedom struggle’ to eradicate hunger, disease and poverty,” according to Outlook, the weekly news magazine. Pranab Mukherjee was speaking on the eve of the 65th anniversary of India’s independence. The reference is to the struggle for freedom over more than fifty years leading up to independence. The full video of the address is here on NDTV.

The job of President is largely ceremonial but former Presidents have done a good job of establishing moral leadership for the nation and Mukherjee certainly knows how to push the levers of power in India — he is a former finance minister, former head of the Planning Commission, former foreign minister and a long-time member of the Congress leadership.
